Teeth whitening is a simple cosmetic procedure that can help improve your smile by bringing your teeth back to their natural whiteness or lighter. Here at Amazing Smiles Dentistry, we offer both laser whitening and home whitening kits.
Why Teeth Whitening?
Professional dental whitening is an extremely effective method of removing stains and discoloration created by food, beverages, and tobacco products from natural teeth. Coffee and tobacco are the most well-known causes of stains, but tea, berries, wine, sports drinks, and certain sauces can also create a considerable amount of staining. If your teeth have become stained and discolored, professional dental whitening can help restore your pearly white smile.
When Whitening Doesn't Work
Our teeth whitening procedures will not generally fix discoloration caused from internal tooth damage such as fluorosis, traumatic injuries, or medications. In addition, whitening normally will not work on crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, bonding, or other artificial hardware. This is important to take into consideration as your natural teeth may not match your artificial dental work after bleaching, which would mean replacing the existing dental work.
Laser whitening takes only one or two hours for completion and has immediate results, making it the faster option. Our laser whitening procedures always begin with a thorough cleaning and polishing. Before the whitening part of the procedure, we ensure that your eyes, face, and gums are carefully protected and that only the teeth are exposed to the laser. Your teeth are then coated with a special gel, and a laser beam is used to activate the bleaching solution. The results are instant, leaving your teeth five or six times whiter than before.
Laser whitening may result in sensitivity, which can last several hours after the procedure. This can be lessened or eliminated by a simple desensitizing procedure.
While the results of the laser whitening option are immediate, it can be more costly than the at-home whitening method and may not last as long. If you're looking for a more cost-effective, longer lasting option, you might consider the home whitening kit.
The process begins by taking an impression of your teeth so we can create a custom-fitted tray. Unlike the trays that come with store-bought kits, the custom-fitted trays fit more closely, keeping the bleaching solution right next to your teeth. The carbamide peroxide solution that comes with our kits is also stronger than the solution in store-bought kits.
The amount of time spent wearing the trays varies depending on the severity of the stains. Some may need to wear them thirty minutes at a time, and those with deeper stains may need to wear them overnight. Treatment can take anywhere from five to fourteen days.
With proper care, whitening can last up to five years. Brushing and flossing regularly and scheduling routine cleanings will help maintain the results of the whitening treatment. You may occasionally also need a whitening touch up. Often, the best option for whiter teeth that last is a combination of laser whitening followed by the use of an at-home kit.
